Prayer for traditional marriage

This prayer comes from the Partners for Transformation desiring to send a passionate cry to God for our state to preserve traditional marriage, but also send it with a tone of humility and repentance. We are FOR marriage as God intends it. We don’t want to be characterized by what we oppose, rather by what we propose as God’s heart for our community.

This is a watershed moment in the history of our state. We will be asked by our children and their children, “What did you do about this when it arose in your generation?” Many of us sat by when prayer and Bible reading were removed from our schools. Many others figured, “someone else will answer the call to stand for life”, when abortion became legal in this country. We already know from history that once a law is passed it is very difficult to reverse. Now is the time. This is the hour for the people of God to ask Him to move in our state. I pray you will join us in Harford County.

Our Heavenly Father,

From the foundation of the world you have designed us to carry your image. As a part of your imprint you made us male and female uniquely drawn for complimentary and fruitful purposes. You established the family unit, calling one man and one woman to leave the security, provision, protection and familiarity of their homes of origin to strike out in a profound union you have called marriage. You created this miracle where two can become one to produce children and reproduce the divine template for each succeeding generation, thus fulfilling Your will to bring Your character, nature, purposes and plans to light for all mankind. We honor You for this plan, for none of us would be here without it.

But Oh God, we confess that sex has become an idol in this culture. We have worshipped at the altar of tolerance redefining its meaning as acceptance, affirmation and promotion. Under the banner of freedom from the constraints of Your relational boundaries we are suffering increased sexual abuse, incest, rape, marital infidelity, pre-marital promiscuity, and experimentation with every conceivable sexual option. There is already great unrest and confusion among our young people, Lord. Even the church has bowed its knee in compromise seeking not to offend those who desire to pursue relationships their own way. We have too often forsaken the spouses of our youth to run after sexual fantasies and devalued the marriage vows through divorce and family destruction. Your people have bowed to intimidating forces that have threatened any voice calling this violence to Your values to account. Forgive us Lord, for our complacency and compromise that has created this incremental dilution of our resolve. On our watch, we have stood by allowing things that threaten the entire disintegration of the social structure You created to bless us. For this we repent.

Father, You know, many in our day ache for the kind of relational depth and commitment You have reserved for marriage. Yet such a longing can only find true fulfillment in Your ways. In all compassion we pray You will protect everyone from unjust attack and harm as we grapple with these issues.

We are deeply grieved by the dismissing of Your standards. You have been clear in Your Word, destruction comes to peoples who reject Your ways. We can see throughout human history Lord, that when a culture has decided to alter Your divine definition, design, and directives regarding marriage, this most fundamental of all societal building blocks, that disaster has come. No society abandoning Your standards has survived. You show us, the consequences of redrawing relational definitions will disable relational trust and disintegrate the next generations.

So, Father we pray Your convicting Spirit will move Your Church to its most loving response, to draw people to Your ways, respectfully preserving their dignity. We ask you to send breakthrough to our leaders, to those You have set in positions of authority to guard and protect our citizens in Maryland. Grant them wisdom from heaven to rightly preserve what You have established as marriage. Give our leaders ways to uplift the dignity of those who desire change without damaging the communities of which we are all a part. Send our leaders revelation about the gravity of the impact of legislating immorality that will destroy the fabric of homes, families and communities. May they be guided by Your truth. Break the strongholds of spiritual forces in heavenly realms and establish your Kingdom in our state. We raise the standard of marriage You have set and we ask that you preserve it among us. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
